    Matteo's Treat

Matteo treated me to dinner in his apt yesterday, as a reward for my offering him a ride to a restaurant to enjoy Gator's 26-3 rout of Miami later that day. The pasta he cooked was awesome, which encouraged me to make the decision to learn some cooking skill from him before his departure to Rome, Italy in four months.

This was the very first time he watched a football match in his whole life.
—— Does any event attract soooooo many people in Italy?
        —— Soccer!

    ——Is God love?

——Now that God is love, why does God commit these?

    大家元宵快乐。

    此为昨天的月食,可惜我的镜头,可惜天上云太厚,可惜也没有时间和耐心等到云散去。匆匆地拍了几张。
    如果小光的远射头在手,那就爽呆了哇!

    the winding path

    有些歌,听过了就忘记;
    有些歌,听是为了忘记。

    有些歌,唱在嘴上;
    有些歌,绕在心里。

    词,不一定能告诉你最感人的故事;
    曲,有时却能拨动你最深处的心弦。

    真正打动过我的歌曲不多,一双手即可数得过来。
    很多时候,都是几年以后偶然的机会,才知道脑中环绕许久的歌叫什么名字,是谁的作品,如获至宝。
    解开尘封的谜,很美,不是么?
    “the winding path”也是其中之一。

    至于这首歌的中文名字,翻译版本不少:《风的迷藏》,《微风小径》,《风的轨迹》,云云众多。大抵因为有个“wind”,于是便绕不开了一个“风”字。但我不以为然。至少我始终感觉不到这凄美婉转的钢琴中有多少风的成分。于是当我第一次知道她叫“the winding path”的时候,我已经执拗将她译成了“曲径”。

    圣诞,甘城变成了一座空城;除夕,顶着25度的艳阳去考试。于是必然错过中西两个“大年夜”。
    很多东西需要去习惯;(至少没有任何意义上的传统佳节,赫赫,想到了“邯郸学步”:融不了新的,却也继承不了传统的。)
    很多东西需要去学习;
    很多东西需要去体会。

    快要过年了,又是一年了。
    想到一个朋友blog上的一句话:在人生的道路上,想哭就哭,想笑就笑吧,只是别忘了赶路!
路,path, the winding path, the path of life!

    Know yourself?

She's a beautiful dog. she likes chasing dragonflies, but today is shining and no dragonfly can be found, so she plays in the pond instead. In the middle of the pond, her behavior is pretty odd: barking, making turns. jumping. "She's so energetic, barking all the time. Is she catching fish?", I said. "Well, after lunch, probably she will sleep for the rest of the day. I don't think there is fish in this pond, she is just barking at her own reflection in the water." the owner of the beauty said.

She did not know herself, do you? How many times are you fighting with yourself in vain?

    Flowers

You can seldom smell a trace of winter in FL. This is Dec, but the flowers flourish in the winter, or more precisely, despite the winter.

    Tebow, Haisman!!!

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IUd4gT5LnPU&watch_response

Dashed the dream of back-to-back national football title, came however the storming news that Gator Tim Tebow won Heisman Trophy, the individual Oscar for the best performance during current year’s college football competition.

Bill once told me that in history no freshman or sophomore could win Heisman.

Bill also told me that judgers do not seem to favor Gator Nation, too much glorious halo has been crowned for UF, too many national titles, too many…

Tim Tebow, the Gator quarterback, unfortunately is a sophomore Gator!

Gators thus do not expect so much for the Heisman, despite the incredible fact that Tebow’s 51 TD's, 3970 yards this year.

But he made it, a sophomore Gator quarterback made it! Note the cast on his right hand (non-throwing hand) in the show, hurt when playing against FSU. No pay no gain, and he paid, paid a lot.

Gator football offers surprises every year. What the football team is supposed to give next year? Just wait and see! Go Gators!!

    Mr. 2-Bits may retire soon

    (extracted from weblink "http://www.cstv.com/sports/m-footbl/uwire/091605adc.html")

That old UF saying, "If you ain't a Gator, you're Gator bait," has applied to many outsiders. But not this one.

George Edmondson Jr., better known to Gator fans as Mr. 2-Bits, has been an avid Gator football follower since the late 1940s, and although he did not attend UF, he has made it his own alma mater.

As the university's unofficial mascot, students have come to expect the lively 83-year-old cheerleader to liven up the crowd before every Gator football game. But students may want to savor his pre-game pep rally, as Edmondson said this season may be his last.

"I plan to retire for good soon," Edmondson said. "Maybe after this year."

Retiring the 2-Bits persona would usher in the end of an era for many: For the last 56 years, Edmondson has not missed a single opening game.
And for 56 years, Edmondson has worn the same signature outfit during every cheer.

"People ask me why I don't wear a blue or orange shirt," he said. "It's because nobody would recognize me."

The university made him an honorary alumnus, while fans made him the focal point of game-day kickoffs.

Edmondson's love of UF started in September of 1949, when the then-27-year-old attended the UF-Citadel game.

"The Gators were terrible back then," he said. "We had a lousy team, but they were just kids out there trying to play a game."

Edmondson said he got mad when Florida fans started to boo their own team. So he began to lead the cheer that eventually would give him his nickname.

"Two bits, four bits, six bits, a dollar," he shouted. "All for the Gators, stand up and holler!"

The cheer kept expanding, and it wasn't too long before everyone started calling him Mr. 2-Bits.

But before he was known for his cheer, Edmondson was a student at The Citadel.

In 1942 just after his freshman year, he withdrew from college to serve in World War II as a Navy pilot in the South Pacific.

When he returned in 1945, Edmondson worked as an insurance salesman in New York City and eventually in Tampa, where he now lives.
On Nov. 14, 1998 at the UF-South Carolina game, Edmondson retired Mr. 2-Bits.

The following year he was asked to come back and make a cameo appearance at the pre-game show. Edmondson said he had a hard time sitting in his seat, so Mr. 2-Bits returned.

"I did retire, but I didn't quit," he said. "If Michael Jordan can come out of retirement, so can I."

But the Florida sun is becoming too much for him, he said, and he does not want to risk falling down and injuring himself.

"Oh, I'll still come to the games," he said. "But I'm just going to sit in my seat and watch them like everyone else."

Edmondson said there will be no replacement after he retires, making it known it's impossible to replace Mr. 2-Bits.

"I never planned it would grow to what it's become or that it would work out the way it has," he said. "It just happened, and it's been a lot of fun."

    none

The tranquility of the night was suddenly torn by a burst of laughter, followed by the music, loud talk, and cheerful acclamation from the neighboring apartment… God, party again!

Quiet amplified every otherwise muffled sound. No way to fall asleep, so the earplugs served their purpose.

Next morning, when I opened my eyes, I caught the unusual light cast from outside, I knew something bad happened: It should be dark; it should be 6:30 had I been woken up by the alarm-clock which now read 8:15, I should be sitting in the classroom at this time.

That was the earplugs: when they were inflating in my ear canal, the outside world disappeared, including my alarm-clock. I laughed a mute laughter: Oh, man, you earplugs, so effective, so high-quality that I even dare not to use you whenever there is first period class next morning.

    Being a Gator

The student identification card issued by UF is called Gator One Card.

The weekend recreational activity in UF, where you can watch free movies, enjoy free drink, is named Gator Night.

“UF is in Gainesville, the Gator Nation is everywhere”. So once you step onto the earth of UF, you become one member of the Gator Nation, consciously or unconsciously.

    Gator this, Gator that…

Gator is a word you can frequently hear, although you are bound to miss it in any official dictionaries.

The weather that typifies Florida is sunshine. (Florida is a well-known sunshine state.) The fruit that typifies Florida is citruses. (You can verify it by simply looking at the license plates issued in Florida.) The animal species that typifies Florida is alligators.

Gator comes from the word “alligator”.

    Bourne’s Ultimatum

Xu Di’s newly bought Thinkpad, my speakers and 17# LCD: this was the best combination of the computers in our dorm. We relished the chance to exploit this “luxurious” computer and enjoy the downloaded high-resolution movies. Dorm was Movie Theater then.

That was show time: showing off Xu’s Thinkpad (He declaimed that it was with such smoothness that his beloved computer processed the otherwise lagged frames), as well as the unforgettable "The Bourne Identity" I and II.

Never imagine that the last part of Bourne’s Series was watched at Regal Gainesville Cinema 14 last night with Arsen, about 18 months after those movie nights.

Arsen, 3 years of my junior, was born in Russia, (or specifically in Soviet) attended senior high school and pursued his B.S. degree both in Miami."People went to University of Miami for two reasons", Arsen once told me, "One is the beach and the other is the Cuban Club." "Then which one is your reason?" I asked. "Because my whole family is there…" He is a movie lover, but there is some difficulty when we talk about movies. I seldom memorize English name of the movies and enormous stars. So we have to take the painful step to imply which movie we are talking about from the description of the story. "Anyhow, it is practice," Arsen comforted me, "and it's interesting."

    We are now lab-mates.

On the weekend of the first complete week after the new semester started, and after enduring the unfathomable Linear Algebra taught by an Indian teacher, Arsen and I decided to “indulge” ourselves, to go further beyond the campus, to watch “Bourne’s Ultimatum”.

Impressive movie, sound atmosphere, happy ending - despite the stinking cold air-conditioner - were worth the money. The main character is Matt Damon: I should remember it!

“What is ultimatum?” I asked Arsen when he drove me home, and got the meaning after his patient explanation. He dropped me at the entrance to our apartment: it was already mid-night.

On opening the door, roommate told me surprisingly that the little creature haunting in our kitchen is not a roach, but a mouse, a small one, smaller than the palm size. He witnessed it.

I called Arsen 15 minutes later to make sure that he reached his apartment safe, and by the way told him the “creature’s identity” in our kitchen.

“I will contact the leasing office and ask for help after the Labor Day, you know, living with mice is really… uncomfortable, so the mice have three more days to enjoy…” I said.

“I give you 3 days, leave my kitchen or you die: your choice. This is my ultimatum to the mice…” I added.

“Well, that IS ultimatum, you got it.” I heard Arsen’s laughter from the other end of the phone.
